Argyle Bordeaux owner with a Dogue de Bordeaux, illustrating loyalty of the French Mastiff.

History of the Dogue de Bordeaux

The Dogue de Bordeaux, also known as the French Mastiff, is one of the oldest dog breeds in France, with a history spanning more than 600 years. Originating in the Bordeaux region of southwestern France, this powerful and loyal breed was developed for a variety of demanding roles, including guarding estates, protecting livestock, pulling carts, and hunting large game.

Throughout history, the Dogue de Bordeaux earned a reputation for its courage, intelligence, and unwavering loyalty. During the Middle Ages, the breed was valued not only as a guardian but also for its strength and versatility. Although the Dogue de Bordeaux faced near extinction during the First and Second World Wars, dedicated breeders worked tirelessly to preserve and restore this remarkable breed.

Today, the Dogue de Bordeaux is admired around the world for its impressive strength, distinctive appearance, and calm, affectionate temperament. While naturally protective of its family, this gentle giant is also known for forming deep bonds with its owners, making it an exceptional companion and devoted family guardian.

At Argyle Bordeaux in Ontario, Canada, we are proud to help preserve the exceptional qualities of the CKC registered Dogue de Bordeaux through responsible breeding, careful selection, and a lifelong commitment to health, structure, temperament, and breed preservation.
